What to Know About Shapewear, According to a Shapewear Expert
Lyndsey Giannacio is a senior merchant at Bare Necessities with 15+ years of experience curating high-performing collections for leading global fashion brands.
- Type: Shapewear shorts, available in long, mid, and short lengths, eliminate underwear lines and can be worn in lieu of panties, says Giannacio. Shapewear bodysuits come in either a brief or short-length style and can be worn underneath anything body-hugging for extra support. Open-bust shapewear offers smoothing and support through your midsection while keeping the flexibility and comfort of your bra, says Giannacio. “These are perfect for outfits with lower necklines or tricky cuts where a built-in bra just wouldn’t work,” she adds.
- Fit: If your shapewear is rolling up or down, creating new lumps or bumps, or causing extra bulges, these could be a sign that they’re too big or too tight. “If your shapewear is truly uncomfortable or suffocating, it’s not worth it,” says Giannacio. “No one wants to spend the day in something that feels like it’s cutting off circulation.”
- Material: Most shapewear is made from spandex, nylon, or microfiber, each offering its own set of benefits. “Spandex provides compression, support, and flexibility, molding to your body while allowing easy movement, while nylon is moisture-wicking and gives a smooth, silky finish, making it ideal for a sleek, seamless look under clothing,” says Giannacio. “For an invisible fit, microfiber is often laser-cut to ensure no visible lines, offering a soft and comfortable feel that’s perfect for a smooth silhouette.”

Best Shapewear Shorts
Spanx Fit‑To‑You Mid-Thigh Short
Spanx
$28 at Spanx
One of Our Stars
What We Like- These were easy to put on and remove, and they never felt restrictive.
What We Don’t Like- The shorts may be a bit too long for anything shorter than a knee-length dress.
From running errands to an office workday, our testers put the Spanx Fit-To-You Mid-Thigh Shorts through a variety of activities. Throughout it all, the shapewear scored high marks. One tester described them as fitting like “biker shorts,” while another noted how the shorts “stayed put without rolling down — even while bending over.” Adding to this, they complimented the fit of the shorts as well as how they’re “stretchy” and “hug you in the right places.”
While these are marketed as an anti-chafe short, our tester highlighted how well it also smoothed and slimmed the body. “I thought it did more than advertised — it slimmed my midsection out a little bit,” she said, adding that the fabric is “super lightweight” and “molds to your body shape,” creating a “nice silhouette.”

One of Our Stars
What We Like- They’re easy to put on and remove.
What We Don’t Like- The waistband is slightly visible underneath clothing.
Our tester loved how easy it was to put this shapewear on and take it off. Especially when worn underneath a loose-fitting dress, the shorts “slid right off without having to remove any other articles of clothing,” she explained. She found that the shapewear was “very comfortable,” had a slimming effect, and didn’t leave any imprints or markings on the skin. “The shorts felt like gym spandex,” she added. It also held up well post-wash and “fit the same after.”

It also provided effective smoothing under clothing, giving a natural and “seamless look” without any “digging, pinching, or discomfort,” — despite being worn for extended periods.

Honeylove SuperPower Short
Honeylove
$89 at Honeylove.comWhat We Like- It remains undetectable even underneath thin, tight-fitting clothing.
What We Don’t Like- It may be difficult to put on and remove if you have long nails.
Our tester for this Honeylove shorts shapewear described herself as being slim with natural curves and a slightly athletic build. She found this option to be secure without feeling restrictive thanks to the boning on the sides. The shorts hit just under the bust and were undetectable beneath tight-fitting clothes, including a thin ribbed dress.
“The side boning is great for accentuating an hourglass figure — I felt like my waist was pretty snatched and my hip dips were more smoothed out,” she explained, adding that “it held up well” despite being washed with “other clothes” and “folded.” The shapewear got bonus points for the mesh on the legs, which our tester said looked great underneath shorter dresses.

It also made the waist “look and feel more defined,” creating a “very smooth silhouette” under clothing. The straps held in place without sliding down or requiring adjustment. What We Don’t Like- At times, the bra part felt like it was falling down.

Plus, it was completely smooth under clothes with no visible lines. In terms of comfort, they gave it a high score. “Despite the fact that it has corset-like wires, it’s quite comfortable once you put it on — I barely noticed that it was there.” Thanks to the built-in bra, it felt “just as natural as wearing a bra under your clothes.”

Spanx Open-Bust Brief Bodysuit
Spanx
$84 at SpanxWhat We Like- This bodysuit offers maximum smoothing with light compression.
What We Don’t Like- It takes a bit of “squeeze and jump” to get into.
While this open-bust bodysuit from Spanx requires some effort to get into, once it’s on, our testers loved the fit. It’s comfortable in terms of compression, providing “a bit of smoothing and light hold,” but not enough to make our testers feel constricted. Also, the shorts are thin enough to prevent chafing, which was a major plus. It did well hiding panty lines and making “everything look smoother.” What’s more, it had zero pilling, shrinkage, or compression changes post-wash.

We Tested Dozens of Women’s Swimsuits for Style, Support, and Durability — Which Made the Biggest Splash?Yes, At-Home Laser Hair Removal Really Works — These Are the Best Devices We Used (Pain-Free!)
How We Tested
During a six-week period, our testers were asked to wear the shapewear under their normal clothing a minimum of twice a week for two hours at a time. They made sure to match the shapewear to the appropriate clothing (a plunging neckline with a plunging dress or top; a backless with a backless garment).
They evaluated the level of compression of each garment and whether it was meant for shaping, smoothing, or sculpting. They also looked at how well the shapewear stayed in place throughout the day. They also considered how comfortable and breathable the shapewear felt for extended periods as well as whether or not it caused any digging, pinching, or discomfort.
Our testers judged whether or not the shapewear offered enough flexibility and freedom of movement for daily activities. Each shapewear was also ranked on how well it looked underneath clothing. And finally, the garments were rated for durability after washing, with testers paying close attention to signs of wear or deterioration in the fabric or seams, as well as changes of shape and effectiveness during the testing period.
