Wearing the wrong bra size isn’t just uncomfortable, it can also lead to chafing and redness—and even cause breasts to sag after years of opting for the wrong support.“For a new bra, start on the loosest hook,” says Kim. “If you can fit more than two fingers behind the band, I recommend sizing down. If the band digs into your skin, size up.” To make sure the band of your bra fits just right, Kim says, you shouldn’t be able to fit more than two fingers behind it, and it should run in a straight line across your back.
As for the cup, there should be no digging or spillage—a cup that’s too small is what creates the “double boob” effect, Kim points out. “When you bend forward, there should also be no gaping between the cups and your breast,” she says. “If you’re wearing an unlined bra, another easy telltale sign that a cup is too big is if there are ripples in your cup caused by excess fabric. You should be able to fill out the cup in your size.”
